題目 : Organometallic Chemistry: A Player in Energy Technologies and Material Applications

My research career in organometallic chemistry started at approx. 30 years ago, during which time our human societies were suffered from the surging price for gasoline. Effective and lower-cost methods were in need to increase the annual production of gasoline and associated petrochemical products using all available sources such as crude oils and coals. I entered this research area with goals of buildup the basic model reactions for the Fischer-Tropsch Syntheses (FTS), which is known to be the technology, capable of converting carbon monoxide into the higher boiling hydrocarbons in great efficiencies and lower costs. After then, our group had spent time to look for the new design of precursors for the Metal Organic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD), with an ambition in finding suitable volatile materials for depositing transition-metal and associated metal oxide thin-films. Later on, the remarkable development of the Organic Light Emitting Diodes (OLEDs) caught our attentions in the earlier 21th century. We then switched gears and started to work on the preparation of third-row, late-transition metal complexes which are capable of displaying higher chemical stabilities, better emission quantum yields and in various color hues. In the meantime, we also discovered that, with proper structural modification, our transition-metal complexes also worked very well in serving as light absorber and for injecting photoelectrons in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). In this presentation, these seeming independent research results will be systematic discussed in an attempt to elaborate our understanding in the basic organometallic chemistry.
